The Caretaker's Concern 2/20/09

The Caretaker hasn't much to report on today, busy trying to get caught up, so today's post will consist of photos from the archive and a journal entry from the archive. The Caretaker was not very diligent in keeping up with his journal for 2003, the last post with a journal entry from 2003 was the last journal entry he made for that year. For 2004 the Caretaker was extremely remiss in keeping a journal, he has but one entry and it consist of just two quotes, they are attributed to no one so the assumption is that he quoted himself, they are as follows:

Wednesday, October 5th, 2004

Two quotes from the Summer:

"Watching TV is not a hobby, it's a degeneracy."

"It is only in a Democracy that the people oppress themselves--by not voting."

End Journal for 2004.

Ghetto temp. 45 F.

It was rather cold today, the Caretaker was out and about on the Island as little as possible, in the morning there were two men over by Dome Island, they had a dog with them. It didn't look like they were ice fishing, the Caretaker couldn't figure out why they were out there, their dog probably couldn't either. Given how cold it was the Caretaker decided to stay inside and listen to the Senate hearing for Barack Obama's choice for Attorney General. It was rather shocking, the man gave straight answers, often times using declarative sentences that included words like: "Yes", or "No", very informative. Little to almost none of the usual equivocating as practiced by the Bush administration appointees. Other than that not much else to report.

8/28/08

The day began with a bit of wind from the South, as the day wore on it settled a bit but has now picked up again. Weather report calls for snow and rain tomorrow, probably not a great day for a trip to the mainland but the Caretaker is hoping to make a dump run. Usually a dump run is rather mundane, but tomorrow the Caretaker will be accompanied by someone else, this person will probably make the trip to the dump a touch more interesting. Hopefully the precipitation will hold off in the morning, the Island is long overdue for a dump run.

The weather has not exactly been cooperating for quite some time now as far as photography goes, hopefully these weather patterns will shift in the near future. Thankfully the Caretaker has quite a bit of a back log from the Summer on to October, but it is getting a little bit tiresome all this more of the same. The good news is that the Lake is just 11 degrees above freezing, if all goes well the trend will continue and by the end of the month there will be some opportunities for reflection shots on the Lake. Based on past experience the Winter so far seems to be shaping up to be a good one for snow and ice, that is if the current trends continue. If it turns out to be like last Winter the Caretaker may just have to quite the Island for a while. Sloshing around in 3 inches of water on top of the ice is way less than fun, nor does it make much for photography. The Caretaker is not complaining, he's chosen his path, he must keep walking, if he wanted it otherwise he could set up a studio and start photographing nothing but staged shots.

The Caretaker was off Island for most all of yesterday, he took a road trip to North Jersey, down to the town he grew up in to see his dentist, this time around he had a few moments to go for a walk about the town center. It was somewhat surprising to see how much the town had changed, but also stayed the same. The one thing that stuck out in his mind was the number of shuttered retail spaces, in conversation he learned that most of the closings were rather recent but either way, he was a bit surprised. In fact, it was mildly depressing. Historically the town was one that the moment a business closed up shop a new one was waiting to get in. A long time ago there use to be four gas stations in town, a while back two stopped selling gas and focused on just auto repair, now, there are no gas stations in town. The Caretaker isn't sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, it is not likely it will cause people to buy less gas thus contribute less CO2 and other pollutants to the atmosphere, for gas is quite easy to come by in the area, but as a gauge of the local economy it is probably not such a good sign. Then again, the Caretaker hasn't spent any foot time in his home town in probably over two years so he really hasn't any idea what he is talking about. The one thing he knows is that he still can't figure out what the following sign means:

"You like our air, we like your gas, let's get together."

It was a sign at the outside air pump for customers to use at one of the gas stations in town that stopped selling gas and focused on just auto repair, when walking by this repair shop the Caretaker noticed it seemed to be thriving quite well, but the sign at the air pump was replaced with:

"Air pump shut off when shop is closed"

The Caretaker thought about stopping in to ask about the old sign, but needing to make his appointment with the dentist on time with he decided not to tarry. Another shuttered business was the old Steve's Sweet Shop, looking through the window the Caretaker noticed the back wall was gutted down to the studs. The establishment had long since ceased being Steve's Sweet Shop, but had gone through a number of incarnations throughout the years but always selling candy among many other things. When Steve owned it there was a soda fountain and bar to sit at for milk shakes etc. after he sold it the soda fountain was the first thing to go. From there on in it was more a place for cards and stationary but still always candy and bottled soda, etc. The one town steady that is still in business is Krauser's which is a convenience store. Prior to being Krauser's it was called Garden State Farms which as the Caretaker remembers it they had the coolest brown paper bags, well, the bags were pretty mundane but the print over the entire bag was a great example of Americana folk art--of sorts. The one thing that always amused the Caretaker was the sign for the store, in addition to stating the name of the shop it also listed a few items that it carried, one of which was Cottage Cheese, this always struck the Caretaker as funny, he was glad to see that the signage advertising Cottage Cheese was still up. The Caretaker is no real fan of cottage cheese (nor is he an enemy of cottage cheese either) but he really doesn't see what is all that appetizing about it, more over, he can't imagine someone passing through town and then upon noticing the sign deciding that they must stop in. It's not like the cottage cheese is homemade or even locally made, it's the same slop sold all across the country. Now back when the store was owned (or franchised) by Garden State Farms it could very well have been locally made cottage cheese. Is there such a thing as good versus bad cottage cheese? Isn't it the simplest of cheese to make? Now the Caretaker is probably wrong in this but his thinking is that cottage cheese is nothing more than old milk allowed to go sour. Many a person has made cottage cheese in their own refrigerator by leaving a carton of milk far in the back of the fridge far beyond its expiration date. Now perhaps the Caretaker's palate is nowhere near sophisticated enough to appreciate the nuances of this delicacy called cottage cheese and perhaps never will, but it does leave him to wonder why so many people like it. Now the Caretaker is thinking that the next time he is on the mainland he will have to buy some cottage cheese, however, he has a strong feeling that upon exiting the store he should taste it right there and then because his response will probably be the same as it was the last time he had cottage cheese (which was probably decades ago), after one spoonful:

"Yep, still sucks."

So instead of bringing it back to the Island only to have to bring it back to the mainland for disposal, or worst he ends up storing it in the back of the refrigerator for the rest of the Winter, where it will most likely go on to become Blue cheese, he'll be sure to try it out before bringing it back to the Island, then again, why bother wasting the money in the first place? It's cottage cheese, do they even advertise for it any more? I think the marketing firms have long since figured out that the cottage cheese market is pretty well saturated, if you don't like it you won't buy it no matter how flashy the spokespeople or the packaging. Is there such a thing as an "Artisan Cottage Cheese maker"? The following conversation has probably never happened on the face of the Earth:

"Hey, have you had the Hampton family's cottage cheese?"
"No, should I?"
"Oh most definitely."
"Really? Where do they sell it?"
"Just up the road, they sell it out of their cottage cheese cottage, it's outstanding, they make it in small batches, you really should try some."
"Small batches you say? Sounds delicious, I haven't had small batch cottage cheese since we went away on vacation for a month and forgot to throw out the milk before leaving."
"Oh I know what you mean, but they are artisans and the regular homemade stuff doesn't even remotely compare to the Hampton's small batch cottage cheese. It's so cottage-ee and cheese-ee."
"Mmm, my mouth is watering for some Hampton's cottage cheese right now. Do you think they're open? Do you think I can get some small batch cottage cheese right now?"
"No, they only sell it on the third Tuesday of the third week of the third month of the season."
"So only four times a year?"
"Yep."
"Well that's stupid, how do they expect to make a living?"
"They aren't interested in making a living from their cottage cheese, they're ARTISTS!!!"
"It's just cottage cheese, relax."
"Fie on you, FIE! FIE! FIE! I should have never told you about the Hampton's small batch cottage cheese. You simpleton, why would I have ever thought that you could ever truly appreciate the grandeur of flavor to be found in the Hampton's cottage cheese? WHY???"
"Rrrright, what were you thinking? Well, I think I'll be off now, ta ta."
Walking away, under breath: "what a cottage cheese freak-show."

If cottage cheese has ever elicited such a response (or anything remotely close to it) from anyone, the Caretaker would like to know about it. Thank you.

The Caretaker's Concern 11/26/08

Lake Temp. 45 F.
Ghetto temp. 42 F.
Island tmp. 37 F. Yesterday's L/H: 36.5/38 F. Due to a cold front the morning was warmer than the evening.

Current conditions: Wind from the South, 10 to 15 mph, dark cloud covered sky, ever so slight precipitation.

9/16/08

The day was mostly dark and gray with clouds, hazy, but certainly on the warm side, at least in comparison to last week's temperatures, occasional flurries. The Caretaker was on the mainland for a brief amount of time, he went up and over the mountains to Warrensburg, what was rain here was snow over there, it was nice to see Winter's blanket. Perhaps we'll have a white Thanksgiving here on the Lake, hopefully it will be a white Winter. Now wouldn't that be nice?

The Caretaker is both happy and sad, happy because he was able to have his first cup of proper tea this morning it seemed like an eternity; sad because he ended up dropping his favorite glass tea cup and it shattered on the floor. He was being lazy, trying to do too many things at once, and so sure enough the one thing to fall was his tea cup, thankfully it had no tea in it--that would have been a total travesty. Not to be deterred he grabbed a less favored tea cup and brewed his tea in that. For the morning it was his usual Organic Scottish Breakfast tea (which is the smoothest of all the "Breakfast" teas), during the day the Caretaker usually goes with Green Pekoe and with dinner he usually has Java Kertasarie. Since he had gone so very long without proper tea he had two cups of Java Kertasarie, for a long time Scottish Breakfast had been a big favorite of his, but he is thinking that Java K. may just displace the Scotts, which is quite smooth, but Java K. seems to be even smoother. Once he finishes up his stock of Scotts he will probably just get more Java K. Always grand to find the perfect tea, at least until one's tastes change. Luckily for the Caretaker he is a patron of the world's greatest teashop, Sensibiliteas, which is owned and operated by the world's greatest teasmith, Donnalynn. She carries over 400 teas, if you are ever in the Glens Falls, N.Y. area you should definitely make a point to stop in at her shop, if you are into tea it's like being a kid in a candy store. Even if you aren't too into tea you should still stop in, Donna's always got some good conversation. Never going to make it to Glens Falls? Check out her website, you can order on-line:

http://www.sensibiliteasonline.com/

If you don't feel like copying the link, there is a hyper-link to the left under "Favorite Links", it's at the bottom of the list. Tell Donna the Caretaker sent you. If teasmithing were an art-form, well, were nothing, it is an art-form, Donna is teasmith artist extraordinaire.

Whenever the Caretaker stops in he usually ends up having three cups of tea, originally the Caretaker wasn't expecting to be stopping in for a while because he is pretty well stocked with tea, but now that he needs to replace his favorite tea cup he really has no choice. YES!!! That means more Java Kertasarie. Hm, maybe the Caretaker should break more of his tea-wares, wait, that would be stupid, not that stupid ideas ever stopped him (oh boy is that list ever so long). However, the Caretaker is quite surprised that he has managed to not break his glass teapot for the stove. Should that ever happen though he does have his stainless steel teapot he uses for when he brings tea on the trail. Ah tea. The Caretaker will pass on a tea making secret that he practices, only boil enough water for the tea you are brewing at the time. Once boiled water that has begun to cool goes flat, thus using left over once boiled water for an additional cup or pot of tea flattens the taste of the tea, AND this method conserves energy, the lower the volume of water brought to boil the less energy consumed. Yes it is true that if you know you will be having an additional cup or pot quite soon after the first, the remaining heated water will require less energy to return to boil, but when it comes to preparing tea the best way possible, well, the environment takes a back seat--it's tea for Heaven's sakes.

The Caretaker's Concern 11/25/08

Lake Temp. 45.75 F.
Ghetto temp. 42.5 F. and dropping.
Island tmp. 36.5 F. Yesterday's L/H: 24/33 F.

Current conditions: Dark cloud covered sky, wind from the South, about 5 to 10 mph, wet and damp. Rained during the night previous into this morning, stopped by mid afternoon, but still cloudy, low lying, with a minor break around the sun for about 5 minutes. The rain was rather hard at times, occasional mix of snow flakes, upon the mountain tops there was some snow accumulation.

8/28/08

Due to the weather the Caretaker didn't get out much today, but then again, regardless of the weather the Caretaker doesn't get out much. The Caretaker has been working without a kitchen these past few days, which he has been able to manage well enough except for one thing and that is his tea habit. Without a convenient way to rinse dish-ware he has had to forego loose leaf tea, instead he has had to make-do with packaged bagged tea. With nowhere to put his waste water he can't rinse his tea strainer, yes he does have empty bags to bag his own tea but those are lost somewhere in storage for the time being. So, it has been nothing but packaged bagged tea these past few days, because of this and this alone the Caretaker has been left a bit wanting. Sure he lives with no running water through the Winter months (millions of people do it year round), and he lives with marginal heat (millions of people do it and have done it all their lives), not to mention the time he went through the ice his first Winter and had to break through the ice for shore, or when he capsized his sailboat at night and was almost run over by a motorboat, in addition to the above mentioned experiences/circumstances the Caretaker has plenty others that he would consider merely mild annoyances, but to have to suffer packaged bagged tea is something that just might break his spirit. Now don't get the Caretaker wrong, he is not "above" bagged tea, if there is nothing else he will drink it gladly, but knowing that he has plenty of loose leaf tea on hand and can't drink it, well that is can't drink it conveniently--oh the humanity.

A thought just occurred to the Caretaker, and that is to rinse his tea strainer directly in the Lake, technically it is not pollution, but it sure would be a waste of good compost. Well, either way, if all goes as planned the Caretaker will have his kitchen arrangement up and running, at least the waste water part, by tomorrow morning.

--The Caretaker

P.S. The Caretaker would like to thank all of you who gave him compliments (through the blog, and points elsewhere) for the music he posted on his myspace page. Come next Monday he will be posting some more from past recordings.

8/28/08

Weather man is calling for snow tonight followed by freezing rain and then rain. The Caretaker is not sure what it will end up being here on the Island but he is pleased that at least it is not below freezing out. Tomorrow is supposed to be a balmy 40 degrees Fahrenheit! Probably won't be here on the Island but as long as it is above freezing the Caretaker will be pleased. Yes he is looking forward to a good cold Winter with plenty of snow and good thick Lake ice, but not just yet, he has a few more things to do before the Lake freezes over. Earlier today the Caretaker heard a prediction that the area will see a warm spell in the 50's before Winter really kicks in, wouldn't that be nice.

The Caretaker spent much of the day off Island, he has been off Island a lot lately, but he expects to be on the Island for much of the remainder of the week. While in town the Caretaker took delivery of his calendar from a second on-demand on-line printer, he had relatively high hopes for this company's product, unfortunately his hopes were dashed. The product was certainly far better than the first printer he tried, but the result still does not meet the Caretaker's standard. He has come to the conclusion that on-demand printing companies will never be able to meet his standards. The Caretaker has decided that he will have to go about this another way, unfortunately it will most likely require him to convert from RGB to CMYK which is a bit time consuming so it will have to go on the back burner for now, he has other matters of more pressing importance to attend to.

Since the Caretaker has no calendar to show, he has decided to step up another project he has been neglecting for a long while, recording new material. He hasn't recorded any new material yet, and doesn't expect to do so until some time in December so for the meantime the Caretaker has posted some old material on his MySpace page. A number of you have received these tracks in album form so you need not check this out, however for those of you who have requested a copy of those tracks the best the Caretaker can do right now is make some of them available on-line (he doesn't have any hard copies on hand right now). The sound quality on MySpace is a little off, but then again so is the Caretaker's singing so it all balances out. For those of you who are interested in listening to how poorly the Caretaker sings, how lousy he is at playing guitar, and how lamely he writes songs you may do so at the following web address:

Lake Temp. 49.5 F.
Ghetto temp. 36 F.
Island tmp. 34 F. Yesterday's L/H: Missed the specifics, but the morning was "warm" then the cold front rolled in and the rest of the day was progressively colder.

Current conditions: Calm clear night, almost no wind, perhaps a touch here and there every once in a while. This is the first clear night in what seems like ages, before the moon rose Orion was clearly visible just above Buck mountain, the light of some of the stars could be seen reflected upon the water. In the morning the Lake and the Island were visited by snow squalls that varied from snowflakes, hale, and rain. Today marks the first day that snow reached the Island before melting, however, upon touching ground all precipitation turned to water. Hopefully today's snow won't be it for the Winter...
