Not wanting the post for Valentine's Day lonely without verse the Caretaker has posted another poem, this too, lyrics to a song, it has no title as of yet, he often uses it as a warm up so for now the working title is that.

"Warm Up"

I need to know
What it means to let you go
Through that door
For a while
Until you return my smile.

Heart grows dark
When we part
I miss you more and more
By my side through the night
I love to feel you sigh.

It's okay it's alright,
It's okay it's alright,

It's okay it's alright
Until we say good-bye.

Happy Valentine's Day.
Love,
The Caretaker

The Caretaker's Concern 2/13/09

The Caretaker has been away for about 7 days or so, he is now back at the Island. He's got plenty to report but is still trying to get caught up after having been away for a while. He's got lots to share and lots to explain, he hopes to be able to do so come tomorrow.

In this post is a photo from today, and in honor of Valentine's Day the Caretaker has posted a photo of a rose that he took while he was away. Also in honor of Valentine's Day the Caretaker has posted a poem, it's actually lyrics to a song that he came up with a while ago but hasn't made the time to finish writing it so what he's got for now will have to do (it's just a working title). It probably doesn't really read too well but it does sound much better when sung, someday the Caretaker will sing it for you.

"If For No Other Reason"

So I,
Wanted you
To know why,
I'm in love with
Your mind
And all of your
Heart and your soul.

It feels right,
By your side
When we hold tight
Through the night
And I know I,
Will never,
Want to let go.

Some
Times,
Want you now,
But daylight
Crowds your brow.
I fall high
Without you now
So low.
Oh babe,
Don't go.

In my arms you'll always be
Home.

In my heart I'll always dream
Home, with you.

The Caretaker's Concern 1/16/09

Ghetto temp. 48 F.
Island tmp. .5 F. Today's L/H: -4/8 F.

Current conditions: Mostly clear night, mild wind from somewhere.

Today's report will be posted tomorrow but more likely Sunday because based on the Caretaker's schedule for tomorrow he's not likely to be back to the Island in time to post to his blog for Saturday. Have a good weekend.

The Caretaker's Concern 11/25/08

Lake Temp. 45.75 F.
Ghetto temp. 42.5 F. and dropping.
Island tmp. 36.5 F. Yesterday's L/H: 24/33 F.

Current conditions: Dark cloud covered sky, wind from the South, about 5 to 10 mph, wet and damp. Rained during the night previous into this morning, stopped by mid afternoon, but still cloudy, low lying, with a minor break around the sun for about 5 minutes. The rain was rather hard at times, occasional mix of snow flakes, upon the mountain tops there was some snow accumulation.

Due to the weather the Caretaker didn't get out much today, but then again, regardless of the weather the Caretaker doesn't get out much. The Caretaker has been working without a kitchen these past few days, which he has been able to manage well enough except for one thing and that is his tea habit. Without a convenient way to rinse dish-ware he has had to forego loose leaf tea, instead he has had to make-do with packaged bagged tea. With nowhere to put his waste water he can't rinse his tea strainer, yes he does have empty bags to bag his own tea but those are lost somewhere in storage for the time being. So, it has been nothing but packaged bagged tea these past few days, because of this and this alone the Caretaker has been left a bit wanting. Sure he lives with no running water through the Winter months (millions of people do it year round), and he lives with marginal heat (millions of people do it and have done it all their lives), not to mention the time he went through the ice his first Winter and had to break through the ice for shore, or when he capsized his sailboat at night and was almost run over by a motorboat, in addition to the above mentioned experiences/circumstances the Caretaker has plenty others that he would consider merely mild annoyances, but to have to suffer packaged bagged tea is something that just might break his spirit. Now don't get the Caretaker wrong, he is not "above" bagged tea, if there is nothing else he will drink it gladly, but knowing that he has plenty of loose leaf tea on hand and can't drink it, well that is can't drink it conveniently--oh the humanity.

A thought just occurred to the Caretaker, and that is to rinse his tea strainer directly in the Lake, technically it is not pollution, but it sure would be a waste of good compost. Well, either way, if all goes as planned the Caretaker will have his kitchen arrangement up and running, at least the waste water part, by tomorrow morning.

P.S. The Caretaker would like to thank all of you who gave him compliments (through the blog, and points elsewhere) for the music he posted on his myspace page. Come next Monday he will be posting some more from past recordings.

Weather man is calling for snow tonight followed by freezing rain and then rain. The Caretaker is not sure what it will end up being here on the Island but he is pleased that at least it is not below freezing out. Tomorrow is supposed to be a balmy 40 degrees Fahrenheit! Probably won't be here on the Island but as long as it is above freezing the Caretaker will be pleased. Yes he is looking forward to a good cold Winter with plenty of snow and good thick Lake ice, but not just yet, he has a few more things to do before the Lake freezes over. Earlier today the Caretaker heard a prediction that the area will see a warm spell in the 50's before Winter really kicks in, wouldn't that be nice.

The Caretaker spent much of the day off Island, he has been off Island a lot lately, but he expects to be on the Island for much of the remainder of the week. While in town the Caretaker took delivery of his calendar from a second on-demand on-line printer, he had relatively high hopes for this company's product, unfortunately his hopes were dashed. The product was certainly far better than the first printer he tried, but the result still does not meet the Caretaker's standard. He has come to the conclusion that on-demand printing companies will never be able to meet his standards. The Caretaker has decided that he will have to go about this another way, unfortunately it will most likely require him to convert from RGB to CMYK which is a bit time consuming so it will have to go on the back burner for now, he has other matters of more pressing importance to attend to.

Since the Caretaker has no calendar to show, he has decided to step up another project he has been neglecting for a long while, recording new material. He hasn't recorded any new material yet, and doesn't expect to do so until some time in December so for the meantime the Caretaker has posted some old material on his MySpace page. A number of you have received these tracks in album form so you need not check this out, however for those of you who have requested a copy of those tracks the best the Caretaker can do right now is make some of them available on-line (he doesn't have any hard copies on hand right now). The sound quality on MySpace is a little off, but then again so is the Caretaker's singing so it all balances out. For those of you who are interested in listening to how poorly the Caretaker sings, how lousy he is at playing guitar, and how lamely he writes songs you may do so at the following web address:

The Caretaker's Concern 10/9/08
Lake Temp. No Lake temperature report until the Caretaker stops swimming for the season.
Ghetto temp. 63 F.
Island tmp. 62 F. Yesterday's L/H: no low/62 F.
Current conditions: Mostly clear night, occasional cloud clusters passing over from North West to South East 10 mph or so, at Lake level the wind is from the South, a gentle breeze, about 3 mph, enough for the water to reflect the moonlight in a broad shimmering swath as a river of chrome.

The first photo is from this morning, taken at around 8 a.m. (EST), the second photo is from this evening at around 6:20 p.m. (EST). As you can see the day ended much different than from how it started. Today ended up being rather
Summer like, while the Caretaker was on the mainland he remarked to himself: "Self, if I were to be running around, I would much prefer to be wearing shorts than the slacks that I am. Thankfully Self you are not running around."

This recent snap of warm weather will help to keep the foliage around, while in town today the Caretaker saw a number of Leaf Peepers out and about on the streets. Hopefully for their sake they will remain for the weekend or return by the weekend because it should be quite a high time for leaf peeping. It's a shame that the majority of them stay mostly to the roads inside their cars, they should get out and about in the woods on foot and take in all that the Great Outdoors has to offer.

What better way to Peep,
Than lying beneath a tree?
Gazing up through the branches
Watching as a gentle breeze
Tumbles around and about, shifting and sliding
Colorful Autumn leaves.

Glorious this colorful collage
Of falling foliage.

So if this is just one of the many things to be seen in the Great Outdoors when out in the outdoors, what is it when seen from say behind a windshield? The not so great outdoors? The inside but outside outdoors? The outdoors from inside? The "outdoors are nice to see but I'm not going out in them" outdoors? Well, who knows? Who cares? Whatever the case maybe, the Caretakers only real point is this: get out and enjoy the foliage. Not Autumn where you are? Get out and enjoy the foliage anyway, if you want bring a couple of cans of spray paint and color the leaves yourself. That's a joke, don't spray paint the leaves on the trees. Seriously, don't do that. They're covered enough in pollution. Which is not a joke either, don't cover the leaves in pollution. Seriously, don't do that. Stop it. Whiny child's voice: "God, they're covering the leaves in pollution."

TCC for 2/14/08

The Caretaker's Concern 2/14/08
Ghetto temp. 43 F. and rising.
Island tmp. 25 F. Yesterday's L/H: 20.5/30 F.
Current conditions: Sky clouding over, light wind form the South.

The Caretaker had put together a small portfolio of some of his photography with the intention of getting over to the mainland to show it to a number of shop owners to see if they would be interested in photo-cards, and of course he intended to do some other errands, like fuel, etc. as stated yesterday. It was mostly a good idea--for a little while at least. The Caretaker got a much later start on the day than he had originally planned, this wasn't much of a surprise. By the time the Caretaker was ready to leave the Island he decided that the best plan would be to cut everything from his errand list except for trying to hock some of his photography via his portfolio. He knew that he would have to spend some time shoveling his car out so wasn't expecting to be able to just ski over, hop in the car and go. He figured on at least a half an hour maybe an hour tops. In the end it took the Caretaker some 5 hours or so to get his car out.

Due to the freezing rain the snow on his car was well crusted with a good layer of ice. It was almost like carving a car out of ice. Breaking up the ice on his car took way longer than he expected. Shoveling out the ice, snow, and frozen snow from around his car took way longer than he expected, about two or more hours. Eventually he cleared a path for his car , he got in it, put the key in the ignition, turned it to get the glow plugs hot, after the glow plug light went out he turned his key further to start the engine, nothing.

Silence. The car's starter motor wouldn't turn over. The Caretaker was already late on his schedule, now he was going to be even more so, but still he pressed on. After getting a few extension chords and a battery charger from G. he went about setting up the charger for his battery. The charger showed that it was in need of a charge. The charger also had a jump start function, but that didn't prove fruitful. Now there was nothing for the Caretaker to do but wait for the charger to charge his car battery. In the meantime the Caretaker helped G. shovel out one of his cars. Eventually they were able to get G.'s car out. The Caretaker went back to his car to try to start it again. No luck. However, the charger showed that the battery should be pretty close to fully charged. This wasn't the first time that the Caretaker's car battery had gone dead, thus he had a feeling that perhaps his car battery was shot. Luckily G. had an extra car battery that he recovered from the dump. G. recovers a lot from the dump, this find most certainly proved useful. However the battery was too big for the battery compartment on the Caretaker's car, the Caretaker was able to get the battery in, but was not able to jury-rig it in any sort of way that would be safe. Also, the negative lead from the car wouldn't reach the negative terminal on the battery. There was no way that the Caretaker was going to be able to drive down the road with this battery. Yet the Caretaker pressed on .

The Caretaker tilted the battery nearly 90 degrees so he could attach the positive lead to the battery. He then put the battery in the battery compartment as much as possible. The Caretaker then went to the back of his car for his jumper wire. This is a moderate gauge wire with clips on both ends, it is intended to be used for jumping his glow plugs incase they stop heating from the ignition. He returned to the battery and attached one clip to the negative lead and the other end to the negative battery terminal. The Caretaker hopped in the car, turned the key and got it to start. He then got out of the car to remove the battery. The Caretaker owns a '86 Volkswagen diesel golf, technically the engine does not need the battery connected to keep running. The Caretaker's plan was to get the car started, swap the batteries and then drive directly to an auto-parts store to buy a replacement battery, and this is exactly what he did. He disconnected the negative lead, then the positive lead then swapped the batteries and quickly attached the leads in reverse order of how he removed them. Tightened down the terminals and got on his way, that is after returning G.'s battery, etc. By the time the Caretaker finished installing a new battery in his car he figured that he had missed his chance to visit with any shop owners regarding his photography, well, all but one. She saw his work, liked some of it, expressed an interest. And with that the Caretaker turned towards home to make his way back to the Island for the night.

Happy Valentine's Day:

"Even If It's Just for a Little While"

Hold me again, she says,
Don't let me go.
Love me again,
You're all I know.
Lonely as friends,
I want you so...

In my arms,
No one else around us.
Cross my heart,
You're the one who's found it.
On my mind,
So much so I've lost it.

Hating
The time,
I'm all alone.
Waiting
For you,
To come home.

If only I could,
Let you know.
If only I could,
Let you go.

Hold me again, she says,
Don't let me go.
Love me again,
You're all I know.
Lonely as friends,
I want you so...

In my arms,
'Til there is no sorrow.
In my heart,
Is all the love you borrowed.
If my thoughts,
Could only change
Could only change tomorrow.

Hold me again, she says,
Don't let me go.
