Before there was the blog the Caretaker sent out posts via e-mail, the following is from the Caretaker's second winter on the Island:

1/30/07:
Lake has produced some minor pressure cracks and it looks as though a substantial one, at least a foot high has formed off towards the narrows.
Sun with a few clouds, No wind.
Outside temp. 11 F, Ghetto temp. 55 F and rising.
Much popping, cracking, and booming from ice last night.
Caretaker will be going out on the ice today on x-country skis to test ice and drill a hole to check thickness of ice. Given the weather predictions for the next 10 days, the ice should continue to thicken up. This is good and bad, good because it will only become more and more safe, bad because more and more people will be out on the ice, Lake could become busier than it is in August. The curse and bless of snow has not hit and the forecast does not call for any in the near future. Blessed the snow for the x-country skiing; cursed because of the inevitable racket from snowmobiles.
